OUR NAME & PHILOSOPHY
The name "Bonsu" derived from the Akan language, refers to a whale — a creature symbolising strength, endurance, and significance. In the biblical account of Jonah, the whale served as an instrument of preservation and safe deliverance.
In the same spirit, EKBL was founded on the principles of safety, preservation, and reliability.
Just as the whale delivered Jonah safely, EKBL is committed to "bringing customers home" by delivering quality products and dependable services that protect customer operations, assets, and people.
Quality First, As Always — and our enduring promise: Built on Quality. Trusted for Life.
HOW THE COMPANY STARTED
The Company began as a small car accessories shop in Obuasi, operating for approximately two years. During this period, road construction activities within the township adversely affected business operations, creating significant operational and financial challenges.
Rather than giving up, the Founder demonstrated resilience and adaptability by:
- Expanding business reach between Obuasi and Kumasi
- Introducing door-to-door deliveries to mining companies and other clients
- Using public transport ("trotro") and taxis to deliver products before acquiring a delivery vehicle
In mid-1998, the Company secured a shop at Suame Magazine, which served as EKBL's operational office and Head Office until November 2015.
Guided by the belief that "every trial is an opportunity and every difficulty is a challenge," the Company grew stronger through adversity rather than being limited by it.
Today, EKBL has evolved into a respected and trusted brand, delivering automotive, hydrocarbon, pneumatic, and industrial support solutions to individuals, institutions, and leading mining companies across Ghana.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FOUNDER
The Founder of E K Bonsu Limited (EKBL), Mr Ernest Kojo Bonsu, is a visionary entrepreneur whose life journey of resilience, faith, discipline, and hard work laid the foundation for the Company's success.
Born in the early 1970s to Mr Kwame Bonsu and Madam Alice Yeboah, Mr Bonsu began his basic education at Gyedu L/A Primary School in the then Brong Ahafo Region. He continued his schooling at Ahmadiyya Preparatory School, Ashanti New Town L/A Middle School in Kumasi, and later Achiase L/A Middle School, where he obtained his Middle School Leaving Certificate (MSLC) in 1987.
From an early age, he combined formal education with modest income-generating activities such as cobbling, car washing, and petty trading. These early experiences nurtured his sense of responsibility, financial independence, and strong work ethic.
After completing middle school, he relocated to Tamale, where he gained practical work experience:
- As a Store Assistant in his uncle's alcoholic beverage distribution business
- As a Fuel Pump Attendant at a Shell Service Station, where he worked for approximately three years
Seeking broader exposure and skills development, Mr Bonsu later travelled to Germany, where he worked across several sectors, including:
- Restaurants
- Cleaning services
- A vulcanising company, where he acquired valuable technical skills that would later influence his entrepreneurial pursuits
In 1993, he married Mrs. Doris Tuffour Bonsu, and together they have been blessed with six children: Kelvin Agyemang Bonsu, Henry Tuffour Bonsu, Priscilla Serwaa Bonsu, Prince Kwaku Bonsu, Jemima Tiwaa Bonsu, and Roland Agyei Bonsu. Mrs. Bonsu has played a pivotal and unwavering supportive role in the growth and success of the business, exemplifying the timeless adage that "behind every successful man stands a strong and supportive woman."
Upon his return to Ghana in 1994, Mr Bonsu began work as a taxi driver within his second week of arrival. After approximately one year in commercial driving, and guided by faith, discipline, and unwavering ambition, he laid the foundation for what has today evolved into E K Bonsu Limited. His story remains a powerful testament to what determination, humility, perseverance, and hard work can achieve, and it continues to inspire the culture and values that define EKBL.
